Which High School Is My Sandy, Utah Home In?

Four high schools serve Sandy addresses. Jordan High takes the centre and the west. Alta High takes the south. Hillcrest High takes a band across north-central Sandy, and Hillcrest is in Midvale. Brighton High takes the north-east bench, and Brighton is in Cottonwood Heights. If you are buying on the north end or the east bench, there is a real chance your Sandy home feeds a high school in another city. That surprises almost everyone.

Jordan High — the centre and the west

Jordan High School, 95 Beetdigger Blvd, Sandy. Its boundary runs roughly from 8700 South down to 10600 South, west of about 2000 East, plus a strip in the far south-west below 11000 South near the freeway. This is the largest slice of Sandy by area and it takes in Historic Sandy, the central grid and most of the west side. Jordan is one of the oldest high schools in the state, and enrollment was about 1,820 in 2024-25. Its auditorium, black box theatre and fieldhouse have been under construction since the 2025-26 winter break, with completion expected in fall 2026.

Alta High — the south

Alta High School, 11055 S 1000 East, Sandy. Everything below roughly 10600 South, plus the east bench from about 10000 South down. That covers Pepperwood, the Granite area, Sunrise, Altara, Lone Peak and Crescent. Enrollment was about 2,278 in 2024-25, the largest of the four. State records list Alta and Jordan as grades 8–12, but neither school enrolls a single eighth grader; both are 9–12 in practice.

Hillcrest High — north-central Sandy, from a school in Midvale

Hillcrest High School, 7350 S 900 East, Midvale. Its boundary covers Sandy roughly north of 9400 South, between about 350 East and 1400 East. East Sandy, Peruvian Park and Silver Mesa elementaries feed Union Middle and then Hillcrest. This is the boundary that catches people out most often, because the homes are unambiguously Sandy — Sandy addresses, Sandy city services, Sandy taxes — and the high school is in the next city over.

Brighton High — the north-east bench, from a school in Cottonwood Heights

Brighton High School, 2220 E Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood Heights. Its boundary covers Sandy east of roughly 1500 East and north of about 9700 South. Brookwood and Quail Hollow elementaries feed Albion Middle and then Brighton, and so does the northern end of the Granite Elementary boundary. I have not found a competitor page anywhere that mentions Brighton in connection with Sandy at all.

One elementary school, two different high schools

Granite Elementary is the strangest boundary in the city, and I have not seen it written down anywhere. Its attendance area runs from about 9800 South down past 10800 South along the east bench, and it splits. The northern end feeds Albion Middle and then Brighton High in Cottonwood Heights. The southern end feeds Indian Hills Middle and then Alta High in Sandy. There is even a pocket in the middle, around 10200 to 10600 South near 2400 East, that feeds Eastmont Middle and then Alta. Three middle schools and two high schools out of one elementary boundary.

If you are buying anywhere on the east bench between 9800 and 10800 South, this is the single most important thing to check before you write an offer, because two homes a few streets apart can graduate from different high schools in different cities. Confirm the assignment for the specific address with the district rather than relying on the neighborhood name.

Six middle schools, including one in Midvale

Mount Jordan, Union, Albion, Eastmont and Indian Hills all serve Sandy addresses. So does Midvale Middle, which picks up the far north-west corner of the city along with Copperview Elementary. A home there is in Sandy, pays Sandy city taxes, and sends its children to two Midvale schools before they reach Jordan High back in Sandy.

Alta High’s boundary crosses the city line into Draper

This works in both directions. Draper north of about 12300 South feeds Sprucewood Elementary, Indian Hills Middle and Alta High — and all three of those schools sit physically in Sandy. So Alta serves Draper families, and Hillcrest and Brighton serve Sandy families. The school boundary map and the city map are two different maps, and in this part of the valley they do not line up.

Boundaries really do change — mine did

I grew up in Sandy, right on the White City line, and went to Edgemont Elementary, Eastmont Middle and Jordan High. Two of those three still exist under those names. Edgemont opened in 1958 and closed in 2022, when it merged with Bell View Elementary to become the new Glacier Hills Elementary. During construction the Edgemont students were moved into the Crescent View building. The feeder pattern I grew up in is still there — the elementary school at the front of it just has a different name, a different building and a Yeti for a mascot. So when people ask me whether Sandy boundaries actually change, I can say yes without looking anything up.

The districtwide study underway now

Canyons has an active districtwide boundary study, and it matters if you are buying here with school-age children. On May 5, 2026 the board paused two proposed Sandy elementary consolidations — Granite with Quail Hollow, and Park Lane with Willow Canyon — pending a broader review of enrollment across the whole district. The Long-Range Planning Committee is continuing that work through the 2026-27 school year, and it now covers middle and high school feeder patterns as well as elementary boundaries. Board member Katie Dahle put the timeline this way: “We have until December to make any final decisions for the ’27-’28 year.”

Separately, Bella Vista Elementary in Cottonwood Heights has already closed and merged into Ridgecrest, and the district has said a rebuild of Sandy Elementary could start as soon as fall 2028. As of September 2026 the two Sandy consolidations are still paused with no decision. I check this before every offer I write for a family, and I update this page when the board acts.

How to check a specific address

Use Canyons School District’s own boundary lookup, or call the school directly. Do not rely on a listing portal, a neighborhood name, or this page for a final answer — including the Granite Elementary split above, which is exactly the kind of line a stale map gets wrong. What I can do is tell you which questions to ask, check the current assignment for any home you are considering, and flag whether that address sits near a line that is under review right now.

How many high schools serve Sandy, Utah?

Four. Jordan High and Alta High are both in Sandy. Hillcrest High, which serves a band across north-central Sandy, is in Midvale. Brighton High, which serves the north-east bench, is in Cottonwood Heights. Diamond Ridge is also located in Sandy, but it is Canyons District’s alternative school of choice rather than a comprehensive neighborhood high school.

Is all of Sandy in Alta High School’s boundary?

No. Alta serves the south of the city, roughly below 10600 South plus the east bench below about 10000 South. The centre and west of Sandy feed Jordan High, north-central Sandy feeds Hillcrest, and the north-east bench feeds Brighton.

Can a home in Sandy feed a high school in another city?

Yes, and it is common. Hillcrest High is in Midvale and Brighton High is in Cottonwood Heights, and both take Sandy addresses. The far north-west corner of Sandy also feeds Copperview Elementary and Midvale Middle, two Midvale schools, before reaching Jordan High.

Which elementary and middle school does Pepperwood feed?

Is any part of Sandy outside Canyons School District?

Every point I tested across Sandy returned Canyons School District, and Canyons lists Sandy City among the municipalities it serves. Jordan School District begins west of Sandy’s city line. It is fair to say Sandy is served by Canyons; I would avoid claiming that every single address is, without checking the one you care about.

Does Alta High serve any homes outside Sandy?

Yes. Draper north of about 12300 South feeds Sprucewood Elementary, Indian Hills Middle and Alta High, and all three of those schools are physically in Sandy.

Are Sandy schools overcrowded?

The opposite, in places. Sandy’s population has fallen from 96,904 in the 2020 Census to an estimated 92,386 in 2025, and enrollment is stable to declining in some boundaries. That is why the district has been studying elementary consolidations here rather than building new schools.

Are Sandy school boundaries about to change?

Possibly. Canyons paused two proposed Sandy elementary consolidations on May 5, 2026 and extended its districtwide study through the 2026-27 school year. A board member has said decisions for the 2027-28 year were expected by December. Nothing had been decided as of September 2026.
