Moving to Riverton, Utah: A Local's Guide to Each Part of Town

Riverton sits in the southwest Salt Lake Valley, between South Jordan to the north, Herriman to the west, Bluffdale to the south and the Jordan River to the east. Pioneers first farmed it in the mid-1850s as Gardnersville. It became Riverton in 1879 and a city in 1948.
 
Today it's home to about 47,400 people (Census estimate, July 2025) on just 12.6 square miles, and there's very little land left to build on. That makes it a different kind of move than Herriman or Daybreak. You're buying into established neighborhoods with mature parks, a historic town center and some of the easiest freeway access in the south valley. Your options for brand-new construction are limited.

Old Town Riverton: Redwood Road to the Jordan River

This is where Riverton started. The Riverton Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, runs along Redwood Road from about 12300 to 12600 South.
 
Riverton City Park (1452 W 12600 S) is the heart of town. Its 31 acres include a splash pad, three playgrounds, eight pickleball courts, two tennis courts, sand volleyball, a Veterans Memorial and the rodeo arena.
 
The Old Dome Meeting Hall sits inside the park. It opened in 2015, modeled on Riverton's original 1908 Dome Church, whose dome is still on the city logo. It houses a museum with the old church's stained glass and organ.
Riverbend Golf Course (12800 S 1040 W) is an 18-hole, par-72 Salt Lake County course along the river. Dr. O. Roi Hardy Park (12400 River Vista Dr) has a nature boardwalk and direct access to the 45-mile Jordan River Parkway.
 
Errands: Peterson's Fresh Market (1784 W 12600 S) is a family-owned grocer dating to 1938, with a pharmacy (closed Sundays). The Walmart Neighborhood Market is at 1202 W 12600 S.
 
Places to eat: Jim's Family Restaurant (1728 W Park Ave) for all-day breakfast, and Chubby's Cafe (1276 W 12600 S) for burgers.
Other stops: the Riverton Library branch (12877 S 1830 W) and Community Center Park, an all-abilities playground next door.
 
55+ living: the Farms at Tithing Hill community has a clubhouse, pool and gym.
 
Schools: mostly Riverton Elementary and Rosamond, then Hidden Valley or Oquirrh Hills, then Riverton High. See the Riverton School Boundaries guide.

North Riverton: Midas Creek and the South Jordan Line

North of 12600 South, Riverton borders South Jordan. The District shopping center (Target, Harmons, Megaplex 20) is about 8 minutes from Redwood Road.
 
Midas Creek Park (3363 W 11800 S) has a walking trail. The Midas Creek Trail is being built in sections on both sides of Bangerter Highway.
 
Canyonview Park (12200 S Huron Rd) is an all-abilities park.
 
Saint Andrew Catholic School (11835 S 3600 W) is Riverton's Catholic school, from age 3 through 8th grade.
 
Schools: as of 2026–27, the whole Midas Creek Elementary area feeds Oquirrh Hills and Riverton High. That's new this year, so older listing information may show different schools.

Central Riverton: 2700 West and 13400 South

This is the school and ball-field side of town.
 
Schools: Riverton High, Oquirrh Hills Middle and Southland Elementary all sit along 2700 West, and Rose Creek Elementary is on 3600 West.
 
Centennial Park (13000 S 2700 W) has three baseball and softball fields and three large sports fields.
 
Old Farm Park (3250 W 13680 S) has the Danny R. Crump Fishing Pond. Its splash pad is closed for the 2026 season for maintenance.
Intermountain Riverton Hospital (3741 W 12600 S) opened in 2009. It has a Level IV trauma emergency department, maternity care with a Level II NICU and a cancer center.
 
Shopping: 13400 South near 3600 West is a busy retail stretch with Kohl's (13319 S 3600 W), and the Walmart Supercenter is at 13502 S Hamilton View Rd.
 
Places to eat: Salsa Leedos (13298 S Market Center Dr), a family-owned Mexican grill since 2001, and TacoMania (3673 W 13400 S) for street tacos. On 12600 South, try La Fountain (2842 W) and Crumbl Cookies (2778 W).

West Riverton: Mountain View Village and Western Springs

West Riverton is the newest part of town and home to its biggest shopping destination.
 
Mountain View Village is CenterCal's 85-acre outdoor center between Bangerter Highway and Mountain View Corridor, around 13400 South. It has Harmons, Cinemark Riverton and XD (14 screens with recliners) and dozens of shops.
 
Restaurants include North Italia (Utah's first), Flower Child (opened January 2026), R&R BBQ, Saffron Circle, Zao Asian Cafe and Seoul Meat Co. For a night out, there's X-Golf simulators and Red Door Escape Room.
Costco is just north, at 13126 S Eagles Flight Rd.
 
Western Springs Park (4570 W Goshute Dr) is 20 acres with a splash pad, sledding hill, ball field and horseshoe pits. The Western Springs neighborhood around it is one of Riverton's better values.
 
CR Hamilton Sports Complex (3700 W 13800 S) is 30 acres of baseball, softball and football fields. Monarch Meadows Park (13675 S Monarch Meadows Pkwy) is the start of the Rose Creek Trail, which runs southwest into Herriman.
New construction: most of Riverton's remaining new homes are here, led by EDGEhomes' Mountain Ridge. A new 10-acre park with lighted pickleball courts, a splash pad and a soccer field is planned between 13400 and 13800 South near Sentinel Ridge Blvd.
 
Schools: the southwest corner feeds Foothills or Ridge View/Juniper, then South Hills, then Mountain Ridge High in Herriman, not Riverton High. Check the address.

Bangerter Highway: since November 2025 it has had no stoplights from I-15 in Draper to 4100 South. The 13400 South interchange reopened in September 2025.
 
12600 South (SR-71): heads east to I-15 in Draper.
 
Mountain View Corridor: still has traffic signals. UDOT expects to start the next freeway phase, from Herriman to West Jordan, in 2027.
Buses: Riverton had no bus stops until April 2025. UTA Route 126 now runs along 12600 South and 13400 South between Daybreak Parkway TRAX and Draper Town Center TRAX, with a stop at Riverton Hospital. Route 219 runs down Redwood Road to Sandy Civic Center TRAX.
 
Trains: the closest FrontRunner station is Draper, about 3 miles from Redwood Road.
