Riverton, Utah Schools Explained: A Guide for House-Hunting Parents

by Dallon Smith

Riverton has around 47,700 residents and sits comfortably in the top 50% of Utah public schools for overall test scores, which makes it a solid option for families who want reliable schools without necessarily paying South Jordan or Draper prices. Here's the full list of schools serving the city, plus what I've learned helping families sort through them.

What Families Usually Want to Know

Does it matter whether I'm zoned for Oquirrh Hills or South Hills Middle? Yes, more than most buyers expect. Oquirrh Hills, on 2700 West, feeds Riverton High. South Hills, on 4000 West, serves the southwest corner and feeds Mountain Ridge High in Herriman. My Riverton School Boundaries page lays out each path.

Is Riverton High School overcrowded? At roughly 2,300 students, it's a large comprehensive high school, similar in size to most Jordan District high schools in the area. If a smaller school environment matters to your student, that's worth weighing against North Star Academy, a K-9 charter option just across the Bluffdale line that draws plenty of Riverton families.

What about the technical school listed? Jordan Academy for Technology and Careers South is a vocational campus for 10th through 12th graders, offering career and technical programs that supplement a student's regular high school schedule rather than replacing it.

Are school boundaries likely to change? They can, even in a city that's mostly built out. Starting in 2026–27, the district moved the whole Midas Creek area to Oquirrh Hills and Riverton High; parts of it used to feed Herriman or Mountain Ridge High. Always confirm the boundary for an exact address before you buy.

How I Help Riverton Families with This

When I'm working with buyers who have kids, I pull current boundary maps for every serious listing, not just neighborhood reputation. Riverton's schools are solid across the board, so the real decision usually comes down to commute, school size, and whether a charter option like North Star Academy fits your family better than the assigned district school. If you're still deciding which part of town fits, my Moving to Riverton guide walks through each area.
